सहाय्य:विक्शनरी साहाय्य:Setup For Devanagari
Introduction
संपादनYou are reading this page probably because you want to enable the support for Devanagari and other ‘Indic’ scripts on your computer system. Another article on how to use Devanagari,Help:Hindi Computing Resources on the Internet (including other Indic scripts) on different operating system platforms, promises substantial details.
The focus of this article, however, is to provide tips which enable support for Devanagari script.
The user should be able to locate his relevant solution and apply it in virtually no time. Definite steps are given for each important case. This article deals with two aspects: Reading support and Writing Support. The latter involves user interaction and thus contributes little complication of its own.
It would benfit users if they take note which operating system and browser is in use with them(on their computer system).
Users are requested to discuss their problems on Discussion page and if they are sure about nature of the problem and solution required, they are also requested to modify this article wherever appropriate.

Input-related FAQs
संपादनQ: What is Keyboard Layout?
A: Each key is assinged to some character in that language. Keyboard layout shows the character assiged to the specific key location on our keyboard. Layout is required in case we are using different language on different keyboard style. Ex- Typing Devanagari on English-style keyboard. Typing English on Urdu-style keyboard.
Q: What are different available Keyboard Layouts?

Q: What is Phonetic-based Keyboard Layout?

Q: What is Inscript-based Keyboard Layout?
संपादनA:
Q: What is RTS-based Keyboard Layout?
A: RTS stands for "Rice Transliteration Scheme". It is a Roman transliteration scheme. For e.g. mahatma can be writen as mahaatmaa using indic script, which is very intuitive and you don't have to remember the keyboard layout if you are comfortable with the QWERTY layout.
Q: Which layout is most suited for Devanagari, especially for Marathi?
A:
Q: Which layout for Devanagari is most suited for general users?
A: Since most users have an English-layout keyboard, a mechanism to translate those keystrokes into proper sequence of Devanagari glyphs should be setup for the system. There are several options, from easiest (with basicfacilities) to complex ones (with many advanced features). Phonetic-based, Inscript-based and RTS-based keyboard layouts are avaiable options. Phonetic-based layout is most suited for general users who are assumed to type often in English. For example, some phonetic-layout can translate marAThI into चित्र:Marathi.PNG as appropriate and so on.
Q: What is Keymap? Please expand answer with little technical details for Linux/UNIX.

Display
संपादनWindows XP and later versions of Windows offer appropriate rendering of Devanagari and other Indic scripts. However if Devanagari script is not rendered by default, you can enable support by following these instructions-
- Open 'Control Panel'
- Open 'Regional and Language Options'
- Click 'Languages' tab
- Select the checkbox 'Install files for complex script....'
- Click Apply/OK
Input
संपादनThere are several ways by which one can type in Devanagari on Windows platforms.
1. Microsoft-supported Input Method Editors (Deprecated)
1. Built-in support from Windows XP
- Open 'Control Panel'
- Open 'Regional and Language Options'
- Switch to 'Languages tab'
- Click on 'Details' button in frame 'Text Services and Input Languages'
- Click 'Add' button of dialog 'Text Services and Input Languages'
- Select Marathi in the 'Input Language' list in dialog 'Add Input Languages'
- Select Marathi in the 'Keyboard Layout/IME' list
- Click OK to close all dialog boxes opened so far to confirm the selection
- A 'Language Bar' should become visible on 'Taskbar' or in '[[:en:System Tray|System Tray]' where one can select keyboard layout to be activated
1.2. Download Indic Input IME which contains phonetic layouts for Windows XP.
By default Windows XP comes with the non-phonetic Layout. If you like 'Inscript', you can just follow the previous instructions.
:NOTE: Apparently the Indic IME's are supposed to work only on Microsoft Word and doesn't work well on other applications. Hence the instructions for Phonetic IME here won't be useful unless you are using this input with MS Office. The Inscript keymap however will work out of the box without downloading anything. Use the other two solutions listed below for phonetic keymaps.
2. Sarasvati IME For Windows 2000/XP
- This software is available for download at the site Sarasvati IME On SourceForge.net
- On the site you should get the latest information (it is worth to visit this site)
3. Baraha (Recommended)
- Download latest Baraha software from its website and install it.
- Start 'Baraha Direct' program
- Right-click on the 'Baraha Direct' icon on the status bar, select the 'Unicode' option and then click on 'Devanagari'
Windows 2000/ME

Windows 95, 98, ME and NT
संपादनThese operating systems contain no support for Indic scripts. Downloading Internet Explorer 6.0 should enable you to view Indic scripts on these operating systems but you will not be able to edit any Indic text. If after downloading Internet Explorer, you still cannot view Indic scripts please install an appropriate font.
Mozilla Firefox does not support Indic scripts on these operating systems unless a modified version of the program is used, such as the one found here.
Input
संपादन- Go to Control Panel -> Regional Options
- Select "Indic" under "Language settings for the system"
- Click "OK", the system will ask you to restart
- Restart the system
- Install Baraha 7.0 from Baraha 7.0
- Start Baraha Direct 7.0 and press F11
- In the configuration screen select "Marathi" as Indian language and UNICODE as Output format
- Whenever you want to type in Marathi press F11 and then type (press F11 again to type in English). Note that you don't need to select any special font for doing this. You can type in Marathi at almost anywhere like in notepad, Start Menu->Run edit box, MS Word etc.
- Don't use non-standard browsers that use engines of IE/Netscape in the background (e.g. Deepnet Explorer). I have found out that the edit box under Deepnet Explorer prints ??? characters instead of devnagari characters.
- Happy editing... :)
Applications with special support
